Why Psychotherapy 03/11/2011
For the longest time, Vitali had a hard time grasping why people go to therapists. I don't know if he has changed his mind. The only thing I now know is, why he didn't believe in therapy sessions. He explained once to me that, people know what is best for them themselves and they do not need to go to therapists to tell them what is best for them. Certainly there is no need for you to pay someone to tell you what is best for you. Although I believe what is best for each individual is within themselves and they are the only ones capable of find that out, I don't agree that everyone knows who they are and what they want. I think the value in therapy is that the therapists help individuals find what this best for themselves. It is not necessary the telling. It is more finding. Like the difference between a teacher and a guide. As well as Vitali, I had a hard time understanding the concept of payment to therapists. If they really want to help why would they ask for money in return. Specially if that would cause financial burden and create one more factor of stress in their client's already stressful lives. After doing some research, it hit me that all "helping" professions request payment. Teachers, priests, medical doctors and many more helping professions. We have managed to justify good reasons to pay all these professionals. So why is it so hard to accept that like teachers and priests psychotherapists need to pay for different aspects of their business and lives. Perhaps as a society we have not accepted the value of mental health as much as physical health or spiritual health. |
